My receiver broke :(
#1041 by briantech (1.0000) posted on 5:54pm Tuesday, October 06th, 2009
The power went out yesterday ... I came home and my receiver won't turn on. It has a glowing red light that says "standby" ... but when I press the power button, nothing happens.
[Q]

Tried it with the remote as well as the physical power button on the front of the thing. I unplugged it, let it sit for 10 minutes, reset the power strip ... fucker just won't come on.

What should I dooooooo?

You can get another 5.1 Sony receiver for like $150. Definitely won't be worth trying to fix. Sony and Samsung both make HTIB setups that come with wireless rear speakers for around $300. When they say wireless it is only wireless from the receiver to a little box that the rear speakers need to plug into though.

Unless you're an undercover audio person, and the amp that's dead was $1200.

I found some sick speakers that the company sells direct so they're not crazy expensive. People on the Coachella board love them, and their at least as snobby about that stuff as I am. I'll try to remember what they were.

Is there such a thing as a receiver that has built in audio fading for when you switch inputs? I'm gonna have a computer hooked up to it to play music, as well as use it for the TV audio.
[Q]

A lot of times I'll have the TV on but want to listen to music... but then if something interesting pops up on the TV I switch the audio over to it to hear.
[Q]

It'd just be cool if when you changed inputs, the one it was currently on quickly faded volume down while the one you are changing to would fade in.

I've never seen one.

You could run each of your inputs through a DJ mixer.

My mother bought that system from Sam's Club. It's a pretty good setup for that much money. When you buy stuff like that though, you're kind of stuck with their speakers, since the amp doesn't have enough power to go any bigger. Is there enough space in your room to put those stands next to the TV?

Yeah, cause I was thinking of putting the TV on the wall. There's already holes there where you can see someone had a wall-mounted thing there before.

I was also wondering, it seems you can buy a mount like this:
[Q]

[Q]

And just DIY it yourself with the mounting. What the hell do you do with all the cables then? Don't you have audio, power, and video cables just hanging down in front of the wall?

That looks mean as hell, but I'd rather buy a new receiver and the Aperion stuff that I posted further up. For that much money, you could buy the Denon amp and one of the top level Aperion setups.
[Q]

I bet that Denon center channel is amazing though.

My father has his Pioneer Kuro wall mounted. He ran the cables into the wall and back out at the bottom where he has a little shelf with his cable box, bd, and receiver.

I've seen at outlets at Home Depot for HDMI connections. I wondered why someone would hardwire HDMI in their walls. I guess its for a clean install when you do a wall mount.
