Happy valentines day!
[Q]

My pick for the week: The 2010 Broken Bells debut self titled album.
[Q]

[Q]

Broken Bells is an American indie rock band featuring artist–producer DJ Danger Mouse (billed by his real name, Brian Burton) and James Mercer the lead vocalist and guitarist for the indie rock band The Shins. The project was first announced on Tuesday, September 29, 2009.[1] The pair decided to work together after meeting at a Danish music festival in 2004 and finding they were fans of each others work. Mercer and Burton began recording together in secret at Burton's Los Angeles based studio in March 2008 and describe their material as "melodic, but experimental, too".[2]

So I was going to suggest Public Image Ltd's Metal Box sinse this is one of those Dub-heavy post-punk albums, but listening to it now, I think that I'm the only one who gives a shit and that nobody else would like it. (In particular, I'm envisioning Brian "Baby Bear" Culler complaining about how it stresses him out.)
[Q]

So, let's skip on ahead to something that is more distantly Dub-influenced but also catchier:

Guess who just got a new guido nickname!
[Q]

I'm going with Roky Erickson
[Q]

This dude has had a pretty fucked up life. Here's some text from Paste:
[Q]

It’s been a tough life for Roky Erickson since his 13th Floor Elevators emerged with “You’re Gonna Miss Me” in 1966. Just three years later, Erickson was imprisoned in Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Texas for possession of a single joint. There, he underwent electroshock therapy and experimental antipsychotic treatments. He was released in 1972 to mismanagement and poverty.

well, this weeks albums are a bit harder to find one lala =( so I only got to listen to 1 track from the soundtrack, "You're Gonna Miss Me." and 1 song from Broken Bells, but not that album. and 30 seconds from that Happy Mondays album. guess I'll have to wait til i get home to find them.

my input, though a bit late, is more band than album, as i only could find 2 songs, and pandora played 2 for me. They were quite catchy. Beautiful Small Machines. They only have 1 digital album out, and a single out there.

So I've actually enjoyed this album. Especially the first song, "The High Road", got stuck in my head pretty well.
[Q]

I think, like previous albums we've reviewed, it tapers off in quality towards the end. I think thats pretty much epidemic in the music industry though?
[Q]

Also, being that DJ Danger Mouse was the 2nd half of this "band", I somewhat expected it to have a more electronic bent -- i suppose just because he's got the "DJ" in his name.
[Q]

Looking back at the Gray Album though (DJ Dangermouse's mixing of JayZ's Black Album and the Beatle's White Album), it had zero electronic influence, so I don't know why I thought that this one would.
[Q]

I couldn't ever find the "Youre Gonna Miss Me" soundtrack anywhere.
[Q]

The Happy Mondays album wasn't bad, was nice to just leave in the background at work. Though whatever copy I got was really fubared, as half the songs only had 10 or 15 seconds of music, which was kind of annoying.

Yeah, I only listened to The Broken Bells and Happy Mondays. TBB was pretty good, and I liked some of the drone-y tracks in their. James Mercer's voice sounds good in drone-y mode, and it goes well with drone-y organ.
[Q]

I like the Happy Mondays album a lot. It reminded me of a less rootsy Screamadelica and a lot of the Stone Roses (whose self-titled kicks ass, btw). I particularly liked the less-dirgey, celebratory Dennis and Lois. On the dirgey end, the song "Bob's Yer Uncle" reminded me of Folk Implosion song "Natural One" and got me thinking about how influential this album must have been for the 90s. I pretty much skipped most of the 90s dance/club/rave music until after the fact. It does sound fun now though.
